Pier couldn’t add to their lead until the hour-mark when a free-kick was awarded right on the edge of the box with the away side pleading for a penalty to be awarded.

It didn’t matter too much in the end as Gary Thomas found the back of the net with the resulting free-kick to double Pier’s lead.

Just a minute later the contest was dead and buried.

Ali Caw pressed high up the pitch and robbed a Filey defender before coolly finding the net to make it 3-0.

Pier keeper Kyle Scaife had to be at his best to keep his clean-sheet intact, first making a superb save to tip and effort from Max Gage onto the post, before bringing a goalmouth scramble to a halt with a brave stop on the line.

Edgehill Reserves battled back from 2-1 down to beat Kirkdale United 3-2 in the Scarborough & District FA Junior Cup.

Filey Town had to show plenty of grit and determination to come back from an early 2-0 deficit and beat a determined Westover Wasps side in division one.

Town, playing their first game in five weeks, found themselves 2-0 down after just seven minutes as the Wasps flew out of the traps.

James Seymour made it 1-0 after just three minutes before the prolific Curtis Rose added a second moments later.

The home side impressed for the opening 25 minutes before Town started to find their feet and they made it 2-1 when Ricky Tomlinson was brought down in the box and Josh Emmerson fired in from the spot.

Town started brightly after the break and were level after 49 minutes, Cameron Dobson finding the target after Danny Price’s flick-on.

The away side then took the lead for the first time in the contest when Benjamin Briggs headed in before the goal of the game from Darren Clough made it 4-2 and gave Town some breathing space.

Clough executed a superb Cruyff turn on the edge of the box before lifting the ball precisely over the Wasps keeper.

Late goals from man of the match Tomlinson and Phil Dickens ensured Town put some gloss on the scoreline, ending things at 6-2.

Another of the title challengers also had to show some steel to take three points as Edgehill took on Whitby Fisherman’s Society.

Edgehill led in fortuitous circumstances when a goal-kick struck Phil Warnett and flew into the net for 1-0 after 10 minutes.

Fisherman’s battled back though and after 70 minutes they held a 2-1 lead following a defensive mix-up in the Edgehill rearguard.

Boss Steve Clegg made two substitutions that immediately paid off for his side as both set-up vital goals.

Purvis was involved at the other end shortly after as he thundered in a stunning drive from 30-yards to double Seamer’s lead heading into the break.

Seamer keeper Adam Morriss had to be at his best to make a superb stop to keep his side’s 2-0 lead intact before sub Ben Mason poked home the home side’s third.

Ayton netted a late consolation strike, but Seamer already had the points wrapped up.

Purvis was their star man at full-back.

The spoils were shared after an eight-goal thriller as Sherburn hosted Cayton Reserves in division three.

In a game that ebbed and flowed with both sides holding the lead at different stages, goals from Paul Mills, Andy Adamson, Matty Pickard and Steven Frederickson cancelled out goals from Cayton’s Jake Sands, Ash Durham, John Hodgson and man of the match Mike Szalabski.
