RNLI volunteers hit top bowling form during visit to Bridlington Alexandra

Volunteers from the RNLI swapped saving lives at sea for silverware when they were entertained by a local bowling club.

Some 16 members of the Royal National lifeboat Institute’s Bridlington station were entertained by their near neighbours, Bridlington Alexandra Bowls Club, for an evening of fun on the green.

The lifesaving volunteers hold regular social events to get away from the pressure of their valuable duties, and the choice to go bowling was made by AJ Shepherd, a senior Station Technician, who said: ‘We try to get out and about and do something different and the club were kind enough to entertain us.

"We had a very pleasant evening and I know that some of the RNLI members are keen to come back and try their hands at bowls again.’

The bowls club, based on South Marine Drive, added a bit of competition for the evening by dividing their guests into teams of four, providing coaching, and then hosting a knockout competition, with medals for the winners.

The team names for the evening were made up of Shipping Forecast areas, with the winning team, Cromarty, comprising Sue Clark, Kat Butler, Jason Webber and Alex Rollin, coached by Alex Club Captain John Mitchell.

Chairman of the host club, Lynne Mitchell, said: “It was an honour to have the RNLI as our guests and it was great to see them having some downtime on a lovely summer’s evening.

“We were happy to provide some medals to the winning team – but if I had my way, they would all get medals for the sterling work that they do in providing a round-the-clock search and rescue service on the coast.”

Anyone interested in holding a social evening of bowling at Bridlington Alexandra should contact Mrs Mitchell on 07759 225575.

New members are always welcome at the club, which offers a chance to play the sport at different levels. Apart from local leagues, the club plays friendlies, has fun social sessions, a number of official club competitions, and casual competitions.

Although coaching isn’t available per se, the club is open to the public most days of the week during the summer, and woods and bowling shoes can be hired as part of the overall £5 fee, and members are always on hand to pass on hints and tips about playing the sport.
