RACING AHEAD: Beverley predictions proved correct

Two weeks ago I wrote in this column about a five-furlong Maiden Auction Stakes at Beverley’s opening meeting of the season.

I said at the time: ”A contest that will no doubt reap a few winners around the racecourses of Yorkshire in the coming months.”

Well, if you took the advice on board, your visits to your local pay-out hatch would have been frequent.

The race has thrown up four runners since that race on 15 April, with only the second-placed Halsall, suffering a defeat. The David O’Meara trained two-year-old maybe set his sights a little too high as he was beaten at odds-on favourite in a Class 4 Musselburgh Maiden.

The colt led until weakening over one furlong out.

Halsall should be in the winners’ enclosure soon as he is better than that run, but may have to drop into more appropriate company to get rid of his maiden tag.

The race has produced three winners in the shape of Kings Mimic, Arranmore Girl and the Bill Turner-trained Thee And Me.

Kings Mimic won the Mayday Raceday Median Auction Maiden Stakes at Beverley on Bank Holiday Monday, taking the five-furlong sprint in fine style from stall five, winning by two-and-a-half lengths from the Kevin Ryan-trained Ferryover, who was making his racecourse debut. The two-year-old should be noted, though I would envisage a short price next time we see the Pastoral Pursuits colt.

Kings Mimic, a ready winner at 5/1, is already being talked about as a Royal Ascot horse.

Arranmore Girl was another to win on the Westwood as the Approve filly made all in the Beverley Minster Maiden Auction Fillies’ Stakes, staying on well in the final furlong to see off her 10 rivals. The two-year-old finished fourth in our original highlighted race, and didn’t take anything for granted as she burst from stall five nabbing the rail to win, at 4/1, by two-and-a-half lengths from the David O’Meara-trained Bond Bombshell in second with Bryan Smart’s Ayresome Angel in third.

Thee And Me was beaten eight-and-three-quarter lengths at Beverley and went into a four runner Maiden Stakes on Wolverhampton’s Tapeta track as the 20/1 outsider of the field but was quickest out of the stalls and made all to win by one-and-a-quarter lengths. The Canford Cliffs speed ball could make a quick reappearance at this week’s Chester May Meeting.

The winner of the Beverley race, Taking Libertys is owned by the Hambleton Racing Syndicate. There is the possibility of Royal Ascot on the agenda, but I’m led to believe the valuable sales race at August’s York Ebor meeting is the main target.
