Scarborough RUFC’s new recruits sparkle in pre-season opening win against Douglas
Scarborough RUFC got their pre-season underway on Saturday, running out 38-17 winners over Isle of Man-based Douglas RUFC.
With a number of new signings making their debuts, Scarborough made an encouraging start and took a third-minute lead when Euan Govier broke through a gap in the Douglas defence and crossed over for his side’s first try. New fly-half Jack Glansfield added the extras for 7-0.

The lead soon became 14-0 when James Long popped the ball into the arms of Harry Pett, who raced clear to score under the posts. The hosts continued to knock on the door of the Douglas defence and went over for a third try in the 33rd minute, courtesy of a breath-taking move that resulted in Pett flicking a reverse pass into the arms of Drew Govier, who then crossed over under the posts.
The final action of the half was a try for the visitors to make it 21-5 at the break.

The second half started with the hosts on the front foot, crossing over close to the corner for a try after skipper Sam Dawson was threaded through the defence.
His side’s lead stretched to 31-5 when smart work from Jubilee Soloa presented the number eight with a try-scoring opportunity in the 53rd minute.
The visitors hit back with two tries to cut the deficit to 31-17 before Seth Bodill scored with the last play to give his side a winning start to pre-season.
