SPRiTES transforms Scarborough Library - plus pay-what-you-can tickets - this is when it's on

Scarborough Library will be transformed into a magical hidden glade as ARCADE presents SPRiTES, a new storytelling experience for children aged four to eight and their grown-ups.

The production combines storytelling, puppetry, music, sensory experiences and hands-on creativity to create an intimate alternative to the traditional Christmas show.

Every performance will be pay-what-you-can, helping to make professional theatre accessible to families across Scarborough.

From the producers of GRUE, SPRiTES follows curious five-year-old Lina as she discovers that an ordinary patch of land might contain rather more magic than she first thought.

Written by Hannah Davies, the show explores friendship, kindness, big feelings, curiosity and our connection to the natural world, celebrating the magic that can be found in the everyday and encouraging children to keep asking questions, getting outside and being themselves.

The magic will begin before SPRiTES even opens, with four free community workshops at Scarborough Library on Saturdays throughout November.

Led by a professional artist, local children and families will use natural and found materials to create sculptures, flowers and props that will become part of the finished production.

The free workshops will take place on November 7, 14, 21 and 28 at 10:30am.

The workshops connect directly with the imaginative world of SPRiTES, where forgotten and discarded objects are transformed into magical homes and wildflowers bring new life to overlooked spaces.

After the performance, children will be invited to explore the world of SPRiTES and take part in a creative activity.

Each child will also be given a wildflower seed bomb to take home and plant somewhere they think could do with a little more magic; taking the show's celebration of nature beyond the walls of Scarborough Library.

SPRiTES is written by Hannah Davies, designed by Anna Bean and directed by Rach Drew, with sound design by Nick Granville-Fall and lighting design by Jess Brigham.

It is on at Scarborough Library, Vernon Road, Scarborough, on Saturday December 12 at 4.30pm and Sunday December 13 at 9.30am and 10.30am.
