Special Olympics GB athlete Angus Leckonby gets ready for record attempt
Swimmers from across North and East Yorkshire joined Special Olympics GB athlete Angus Leckonby in York on Sunday (September 13) to help him prepare for his latest Guinness World Record attempt.
Angus, who lives at Octon, recently won four gold medals in swimming at the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games.

He is now hoping to raise £7,500 for Special Olympics GB via the record attempt and has already managed to accrue £5,381 thanks to 91 donations.
A crowdfunding page has been set up to bring in funds for the cause. Go to https://givestar.io/gs/angus-leckonby if you would like to support Angus.
He was joined by more than 50 local swimmers from Scarborough Swimming Club, Humber Sharks (Special Olympics Hull and East Yorkshire), Wolds Triathlon Club and Total Tri Training at York Sports Village to complete the famous a 100 x 100s challenge – 100 sets of four 25-metre lengths, totalling 10,000 metres.
The event helped Angus prepare for his bid to set a new Guinness World Record at London’s iconic Swim Serpentine event on Saturday, September 19, for the Farthest Open Water Swim (six miles) completed by a person with an intellectual disability.
All funds raised will be donated to Special Olympics GB to support the operational delivery of its recent National Summer Games, which took place over 21 days and gave around 1,200 children and adults with an intellectual disability the chance to compete in 15 different sports.
A spokesperson for Angus said: “We would like to give a special mention to Scarbrough Swimming Club who deserve a massive shout-out for the supporting Gus, not only in this event, but over the past 11 years!”
Angus added: “I am a proud Special Olympics Great Britain athlete and captured global attention in 2025 by setting three Guinness World Records, redefining what is possible for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
“In 2026, I plan to set new world records by completing a 70.3 mile triathlon and 10K Marathon Open Water Swim, all to raise vital funds and awareness of Special Olympics GB.”
