Terri Rogers, who works at the hospital, says she wanted to so something in tribute to the colleagues the hospital has lost.

The healthcare assistant, who works mainly in A &E, hopes to provide somewhere for staff to have some quiet time or sit and remember those no longer with them.

If enough is raised, plaques with messages of remembrance could also be added.

“I’ve had an amazing response, I really have,” she said.

“Everyone has been so generous and we have had a man who has agreed to make the bench for us.”

Terri, from Nafferton near Driffield, has set up an online donations page and has already raised more than half the £600 needed for the bench.

Earlier this month, the Scarborough News reported that Dr Abdel Wahab Babiker - a consultant physician at Scarborough Hospital - had died after testing positive for coronavirus.

The 70-year-old had been working as a consultant physician at the hospital since August last year.

Staff and colleagues described him as "energetic", "dedicated" and as having a "can-do" attitude.
