TV auctioneer Charles Hanson seeks Scarborough’s attic finds at free valuation

On the eve of Halloween, TV auctioneer Charles Hanson will be at Saint Catherine’s Hospice for a free antiques valuation event, to discover whether your family heirlooms could deliver some frighteningly big returns.

On Friday, October 30 from 2pm to 4pm, visitors can bring items to the hospice on Throxenby Lane, including gold, silver, textiles, antiques and collectables, to discover what they might be worth.

Charles Hanson, star of Bargain Hunt and Flog It!, said: “North Yorkshire is rich in history and heritage, making it a treasure trove for antiques.

"But we’re not just looking for antiques – sometimes the most valuable finds are the things people least expect.”

Charles heads a network of 12 auction houses across the UK and is also the host of new TV series Secrets of the Auction House, which follows him and his team as they uncover forgotten antiques.

Charles said: “I always say every house has one great treasure squirreled away, and nothing gives me more pleasure than helping people discover what they have.”

One family’s seemingly ordinary blue-and-white Chinese vase went on to sell for £800,000, after being brought to a valuation event in Birmingham.

Susan Stephenson, Fundraising Coordinator at Saint Catherine’s, said: “We are thrilled to be hosting.

“We know the session will be very popular, with visitors looking forward to benefitting from the expertise of Charles Hanson and the team.”

No appointment is required, simply call in to the educational area during the event.

If an item is suitable for auction, estimates, costs and potential sale prices will be explained, with the option to consign it on the day.
