Straw chopper fire and goat rescue keep Scarborough, Pickering and Malton firefighters busy

Unusual incidents on the evening of Wednesday October 21 kept crews from Scarborough, Pickering and Malton on the move.

At 6.47pm on Wednesday evening, crews from Malton and Pickering responded to an incident in Newton on Rawcliffe, where a straw chopper in a farm yard was on fire.

Using two breathing apparatus and water from two hose reel jets, firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze.

The attending crews then used pitchforks to overturn the straw and dampen down further hotspots, with support from the farmer, who operated a telehandler.

Later the same evening at 7.32pm, Scarborough fire crews attended an incident on a farm in Falsgrave, where a goat had become trapped by its leg in a field.

Using battery-powered cutters, the firefighters freed the animal, which was then left in the care of the farmer.
