Morrison stars as Staithes CC claim Beckett League Premier title

Staithes skipper Ben Hogarth said: “I always felt like we were in control of the game.

“My only worry was when we were 40/3 but once we got past their opening bowlers Chris Morrison batted brilliantly and within five overs he changed the game along with Jacob Midgeley.

“Our key players this season have been Midgeley, Simon Bowes and Brad Lewis.

“We all enjoyed the format as it suited the way we generally play with attacking cricket.”

Morrison took 2-33 and claimed a run-out as Nawton posted 140-7, Charlie Allott top-scored with 37 for Grange.

In reply, opener Morrison struck a match-winning 64, after Nawton snapped up three early wickets to rattle the Whitby side’s nerves.

Morrison and Midgeley (33) shared a crucial stand of 83 for the fourth wicket, Ian Dixon’s 18 not out seeing them across the line to earn the silverware.

In the Zone 1 & 2 games, Great Habton won by four wickets at Sewerby.

The hosts were limited to 118-8, only knocks from opener Daniel Artley (25), Shaun Acton (33) and Sommerled McDonald (29) helping them post a respectable total.

Jim Boyes bagged 3-22 and Ryan Vance took 3-30 for Habton, while Jordan Allanby also snapped up 2-28.

Liam Allanby (41) and Doug Bentley (34) were the driving force behind the visitors’ run-chase, Alex Shipley and Acton taking two wickets apiece.

Settrington triumphed by 29 runs at Staxton, skipper Stephen Beal hitting a vital 51.

Andrew Taylor (39) and Marc Dring (23) also helped the hosts to 186-7.

Leon Stafford (3-31) and Charlie Hopper (2-37) were the top Staxton bowlers.

Dan Virr (44), David Snowball (29) and Hopper (27) all battled away for Staxton but top bowling from Ben Corner (3-31), Dring (2-27) and Alastair Wilkinson (2-28) limited the visitors to 157-9.

Scarborough conceded their tie at Bridlington 2nds.

In Division A, Glaisdale stormed to a 122-run win at eight-man Ravenscar.

Sam Spenceley smashed 85 runs of his side’s 150-5.

William Burtt also weighed in with 32, while Gerald Smith took 2-19.

In reply, Babu Mathew top-scored with 11, almost half the Ravenscar total as they were skittled for 28, Jack Allinson taking an amazing 5-8.

Scalby 2nds strolled to an eight-wicket win at Ganton.

Joe Childs and Jon Barton took 3-15 and 3-16 respectively as Ganton made 84-8.

The home side’s problems would have been worse if not for a cracking knock of 40 not out from Dan Reardon.

Rory Skelton (26), Brad Walker (26no) and Carl Marton (18no) wrapped up the win for Scalby.

Ebberston 2nds’ 153-run win at home to Nawton Grange 2nds secured the Division B title for the victors.

A great all-round batting effort from the hosts saw them rack up 221-5 from 29 overs, Jonty Gillingham hitting 60no and good work from Rich Ward (41), Joe Tyson (32), Sam Megginson (28) and Jacob Warters (25).

Darren Smith took 4-44 for Grange, who then slipped to 68 all out, Sam Hardie taking 4-24.

Great Habton 2nds skipper Dan Walker smashed 90 as they romped to a 198-run home win against Thornton Dale 2nds.

Snainton won by two wickets in a close game at Malton & Old Malton 3rds.

Scarborough RUFC’s 67-run home win against closest rivals Flamborough saw them clinch the Division C title.

Mark Shippey hit 38 and Marcus Edwards 27 as the hosts posted 149-9, Josh Garbutt taking 3-23.

Joe Lenton’s superb spell of 4-9, along with two wicket apiece from Edwards and Brett Canham saw Boro slip to 82 all out, Luke Dixon top-scoring for Boro with 20.

Thomas Shepherd’s stunning spell of 5-7-from five overs helped Bridlington 3rds secure a six-wicket win at Wykeham 3rds.

Harvey Asquith took 3-22 and Alex Burton 2-10 as the hosts were skittled for 77.

Brid lost four early wickets but Harry Burton (26no) and Alex Burton (18no) steered them home.
