Matt Conner: Learning swinging basics

On Tuesday evening it was the first session of my winter series of adult group sessions.

There was a whole mixture of golfers from complete beginners, lapsed golfers and current members of golf clubs.

The beauty about golf is that even in a group environment it is still an individual game. You can improve the individual needs of each golfer.

With Tuesday being the first session our group goal was for the beginners to learn the basics of the full golf swing and for the current and lapsed golfers to reinforce good basics of the full swing.

Over the winter months after work it is worth spending time on an evening under the cover of a floodlit driving range practising and reinforcing good basics in all areas of your game.

Set yourself a goal for the evening or for the week that you want to achieve and stick to this throughout your practise session.

Work out a training programme so that you are working towards next year’s golf season.

November: Reinforce basics in the full swing.

December: Reinforce basics in chipping and pitching.

January: Improve accuracy and length in the full swing.

February: Putting aim and speed control.

March: Simulated course practice.
