Jackson beats Morgan in Summer Championship final at Westgate
The East Coast of Yorkshire Crown Green Bowling Sunday Merit programme concluded with the Summer Championship, The President’s Trophy, at Westgate.
This is a competition for the bowlers who have accumulated the most points in Open Singles merits and the Association Singles competitions in the summer.

There was also a Tea & Biscuits (T&B) consolation competition for bowlers who did not qualify for the main competition.
Bridlington Bay’s Andrew Walker got off to a flying start in the final winning 4 ends for a lead of 14-7 before Hunmanby’s Alan Kynaston won an end.
The next 5 ends saw Kynaston pull back a little to 16-11 down only for Walker to win 2 of the next 3 ends for a 19-12 lead.
Kynaston then did stage a real comeback winning 3 ends to trail 19-17 before Walker scored 2 singles to win 21-17.
There were 19 qualifiers for the main competition which started after the weather had improved to make it a sunny day.
There were three preliminary round games which had to be managed in such a way that the seeded players did not face one of the winners who would have already played a full game.
In these Kenny Wale (Whitby) beat Association merit winner Lisa Watson (Hunmanby) 21-8, Stuart Thompson (Pontefract) won 21-18 against Geoff Price (Dukes Park) and Richard Jackson (Thongsbridge) went through 21-16 against Ian Richardson (Robin Hood’s Bay).
In the first round top seed Paul Morgan (North Cliff) won 21-16 against Tim Purcell (Whitby) and Chris Dobson (Dukes Park) beat Barrie Watson (Borough).
Jo Leeman (Whitby) just won a very close game against Jo Gates (Borough) 21-20 to face fourth seed Kevin Gates (Dukes Park) who cruised through 21-11 against Adam Chilvers (North Cliff).
Third seed Callum Malone won an all-Cliff game against Robert Child 21-17 to face Thompson who crushed Wale 21-8.
The round concluded with Jackson beating Steve Dover (Whitby) 21-11 and second seed Alan Landers (North Cliff) survived a late comeback by Gary Thornton (Borough) to win 21-19.
Morgan won the first quarter-final against Dobson 21-18 to face Kevin Gates who had a big 21-7 win over Leeman.
The other quarter-finals were close affairs with Thompson going through 21-20 against Malone and Jackson winning 21-19 against Landers.
The semi-finals were also close-fought affairs with both finishing 21-20, Morgan beating Gates and Jackson eliminating Thompson.
The final was not quite as tight but was a hard fought affair.
The first 4 ends were shared with the score being 3-3.
Morgan then scored a single before Jackson won 7 of the next 8 ends to lead 11-4 after 13 ends. Morgan then scored three 2s to pull back to 11-10 down after 16 ends.
Jackson then won 3 of the next 4 ends to lead 15-11 after 19 ends.
The next 4 ends were shared making it 17-13 before Jackson won 2 ends to stand 1 point from victory on 20-13.
That final point proved difficult to score and Morgan won 2 ends to make it 20-16 only for Jackson to ease over the line for a 21-16 win.
The President’s Trophy and the prizes were presented by Association President Emmo Emmerson.
