The innovative Mako robotic-arm assisted surgery system is available for total knee replacement, partial knee replacement and total hip replacement procedures at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital.

It combines advanced CT-based planning with real-time guidance during surgery.

Before an operation takes place, a patient’s CT scan is used to create a detailed 3D model of their joint, enabling surgeons to develop a personalised surgical plan tailored to their individual anatomy. During surgery, the robotic arm assists the surgeon in carrying out that plan with greater precision.

Reza Mayahi, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital, said: “I’m delighted to be introducing Mako at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital.

“The robot allows me to tailor each hip or knee replacement to the patient’s individual anatomy and carry out that plan with greater precision thereby resulting in quicker recovery and improved outcomes. What excites me most is bringing that technology to the people I care for, helping them move beyond arthritic joint pain and get back to the things they love.”

Another consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Tom Symes, added: “For patients living with joint pain and reduced mobility, Mako robotic-arm assisted surgery represents a significant advancement in hip and knee replacement care.

“The technology enables highly personalised surgical planning and enhanced precision, while ensuring the surgeon remains in complete control throughout the procedure.”

Patients can access treatment through private medical insurance or by self-funding their care.
