Premiership leaders Edgehill held by Hodgsons in six-goal thriller

Edgehill’s 100% start to the Right Car East Riding County League Premiership season was ended in a dramatic 3-3 draw at fellow high-flyers Hodgsons, Billy Logan netting a hat-trick.

In the early stages, both teams were looking to get the upper hand, but were cautious in doing so at the same time, writes Ben Dolan.

Both sides played in a similar way to each other, which cancelled one another out at various points throughout the half. Unfortunately, for Edgehill the hosts were able to take the lead from a well worked passage of play which ended with a goal to make the game 1-0.

Then just before the break the hosts doubled their advantage to take a grip of the match.

In the second half, Edgehill had a much more positive approach and there was a lot of intensity in midfield with Jack Hakings and Jamie Patterson getting a grip on the game.

Eventually after a lot of pressure, they saw the benefits of their work when Logan was brought down in the box and was successful from the spot to get the visitors on the scoresheet.

Very shortly after, Edgehill were awarded a second penalty when Ryan Link was fouled in the area, this resulted in Logan scoring his second from 12 yards.

As a result of the penalty decisions, tensions were high in the game and both sides showed an intensity and desire to win which led to some strong challenges.

Edgehill were able to take the lead in the game for the first time after a throw into the box found its way to Logan, he finished well despite the goalkeeper’s efforts to keep the ball out.

The hosts equalised soon after when a fast breakaway caught out the Edgehill defence and a weak effort found its way into the bottom corner of the net.

Hodgsons thought they had won it in injury-time when their star player Jack Griffin bundled his way through and slotted home. The home bench went wild with celebrations only for the ref to blow for handball.

The match ended 3-3 with Logan awarded man of the match and Edgehill sustained their unbeaten record. Gaz Thomas also had a fine game.

A Cam Macdonald double fired Filey Town to a 3-1 win at Haltemprice.

Nathan Barber was also on target for the visitors.
