Motorists and residents warned of road closure in Norton, near Malton, for gasworks

Motorists are being advised of a temporary road closure in Norton, near Malton, as Northern Gas Networks (NGN) works on ageing metal pipes to ensure the continued safe supply of gas to the community.

To enable the work to continue to be carried out safely, parts of Welham Road, outside No. 42, will be temporarily closed from 9am on Friday, October 23 until the evening of Saturday, October 24.

The closure will start from from 9am on Friday 23 October.placeholder image
The closure will start from from 9am on Friday 23 October.

Once the closure is lifted, multi-way traffic lights will be in place at Park Road and Welham Road.

Residents leaving Park Road will still be able to turn left at the junction with Welham Road towards Malton, but will not be able to turn right.

All road users south of the Park Road junction will need to follow a diversion.

Advance warning signs of the work, which has been planned in collaboration with North Yorkshire Council, will be in place, and the diversion route will be clearly signposted.

Stewart Whitehead, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We know this closure and diversion will cause significant disruption for residents, businesses and everyone who relies on this busy route, and we’re genuinely sorry for the inconvenience and additional journey time it will create.

“We have planned the work to keep the closure as short as possible.

"We’re grateful for everyone’s patience while we complete this essential upgrade.”

For more information about the work, contact NGN’s Customer Care Team on 0800 040 7766 or email [email protected].

Anyone who smells gas or suspects carbon monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999.

The line is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
