Get set for summer sounds … local hearing expert gives his top tips for ear care.
Summer is coming, and for many that means heading off on holiday, going to events or even streaming non-stop footie.
Neil Charlwood from Charlwood Hearing Care in Scarborough, has put together some handy hints to keep your ears healthy, your hearing sharp and to ensure you won’t miss a moment of fun this summer.
Planes, trains and automobiles
If you are travelling somewhere, especially abroad, it’s worth doing a bit of healthcare planning and preparation that’s every bit as important as sun screen and your passport.
Neil says: “If you suffer from painful ears at take-off and landing the cabin pressure combined with dry ears is the cause. Hydration earplugs can really help.”
You’ll have to turn your phone or table to flight mode on board a plane, says Neil, but that won’t stop Bluetooth, so if your hearing aids are connected to your device, you will still be able to stream downloaded content like music and films throughout your journey.
Make sure you pack some simple extras too, to avoid running out abroad.
Neil says: “Make sure you have spare wax filters, domes and batteries for your hearing device, or that you take an international plug if you wear rechargeable hearing aids, to plug in your charger. Finding spares abroad would take up valuable holiday time, and might prove tricky to source, so it’s always best to be prepared.”

Check-ups for you and your devices
It’s also worth having your devices checked and serviced before you travel, to make sure they’re in top condition.
Checking your ears for wax is another sensible pre-holiday plan, especially if you’re going to be going in the sea or pool, to help prevent infection.
Summer allergies can lead to ear, nose and throat irritations, so Neil would advise his customers to speak to their pharmacist for top tips to minimise any impact.
Book in for a test
Finally he said: “Often hearing loss happens so slowly people don’t notice it, until they are in a crowd. If you are planning to watch football in a busy sports bar or on a giant screen this summer, or attend a festival or concert, you may find yourself cut-off from the conversation.
“If you are at all concerned about potential hearing loss we would be very pleased to see you in the clinic and test your hearing.”
